This 4-day program has been designed for nature lovers seeking an authentic connection with the Amazon.
We will explore the most iconic destinations of Tambopata National Reserve: Chuncho Clay Lick, a natural spectacle of color and sound starring hundreds of birds, and Lake Sandoval, a mirror of calm waters that shelters an astonishing diversity of wildlife.
Check availability →Upon arrival at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus terminal, our team will welcome you and take you to our office to organize your luggage. From there, we will begin a land journey, gradually leaving the city behind to enter the lush natural richness of the Amazon. At the port, we will board a motorized boat to navigate the Tambopata and Malinowski Rivers until we reach our eco-lodge, where you will be greeted with a tropical fruit drink and a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, we will take an introductory walk along the trails near the lodge, accompanied by a naturalist guide. You will have the chance to observe howler monkeys, toucans, frogs, butterflies, and giant trees. At nightfall, we will head out again with flashlights for a night walk, perfect for discovering the more mysterious side of the jungle: glass frogs, camouflaged insects, tarantulas, and, if we are lucky, night monkeys or snakes. A unique experience under the natural symphony of the rainforest.
Early in the morning, we will head to the famous Chuncho Clay Lick, one of the largest and most active in the Amazon. Here, hundreds of macaws, parrots, and parakeets gather each morning to feed on the mineral-rich clay. From a safe observation point, we will enjoy this colorful spectacle while having our breakfast outdoors. During the boat ride, there will be opportunities to spot wildlife such as capybaras and caimans. In the afternoon, we will climb a 50-meter observation tower. From the top, we will have panoramic views over the forest canopy—the habitat of toucans, macaws, eagles, and monkeys moving among the treetops. We will end the day watching a beautiful sunset over the Tambopata River as we return to the lodge.
After breakfast, we will hike to a mammal clay lick, a natural area where species such as tapirs, deer, peccaries, and monkeys come to consume essential minerals. Although the chance of seeing them varies, the walk itself is an enriching experience surrounded by ancient trees and the sounds of the deep jungle. After lunch, we will return to Puerto Maldonado and continue towards the area of Lake Sandoval inside Tambopata National Reserve. After a hike of approximately 3 km through humid forests rich in biodiversity, we will board a canoe to navigate this majestic lake. Here, we may see giant otters, black and white caimans, aquatic birds, and taricaya turtles. At nightfall, we will silently paddle with flashlights in search of caimans, whose eyes shine brightly in the darkness. A fascinating and serene experience to close the day on a magical note.
We will start the day very early to watch the sunrise over Lake Sandoval, a moment of absolute peace as wildlife begins its activity. We will paddle quietly in search of elusive giant otters and other morning species. After breakfast, we will take an ethnobotanical walk along the reserve’s trails. You will learn about ancient trees such as the Brazil nut and shihuahuaco, as well as medicinal plants used by Amazonian communities for generations. Return to the lodge for lunch, and then time to say good bye,the expeditions come to an end, go back to the city to the airport or bus station for your return trip. Finally, we will return to the lodge for lunch before beginning the journey back to Puerto Maldonado, where our adventure comes to an end.
